Damon James

Hip Hop artist, writer, producer, and production engineer, Damon James, was born in Southfield Michigan and raised in Detroit. Damon began his musical career at the age of 12 when he began writing and performing his work in the halls of his school to adoring classmates. He and his mother spent a significant portion of his early adolescence migrating to different states across the U.S. as she sought opportunities to better their lives. Although growing up in different states presented many challenges, the unique insight he gained first handedly from those experiences, exposed him to a myriad of American musical forms.

In his preteens, Damon moved in with his grandparents, who were both devout Christians, and their impact on Damon’s spiritual growth along with the foundation of his mother’s earlier teachings opened him up to Christianity. He attended many church services during his youth, which helped him to avoid the pressures of the inner-city streets. The experience of living with his grandparents in Detroit was also the breeding ground for his interest in music.

It was in Detroit where he first began entertaining the idea of having a career in music. From his wife to his mother, aunts, uncles, and grandparents—they have all been extremely influential figures in Damon’s life. They also introduced him to a wide variety of music. All of these experiences were the beginning of Damon’s musical journey. All of these experiences helped to nurture and develop this new style of music. Damon says, “When I really understood Gospel, and what Jesus has done for me—my music, my vocabulary, my life changed for the better. My greatest desire is for people to come to know God, personally. The simple truth is that there is a God who created you and loves you very much.” In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” He gave us life and deserves our gratitude and love.

If I may be so brazen as to borrow a quotation from the late Billy Holiday:
“No two people on earth are alike, and it’s got to be that way in music or it isn’t music.”___________Billie Holiday

“If you copy, it means you’re working without any real feeling. No two people on earth are alike, and it’s got to be that way in music or it isn’t music.”
