A “Tru” Radio Show

Born in Virginia Beach, VA. Tru has been an aficionado of music since he could walk. Growing up in the home of a Keyboardists Father, Soprano Mother, and Percussionist Brother, he was destined to climb the musical performers scale. Listening to the sounds of James Cleveland, Donald Vailes, Dallas Ft. Worth Choir, Timothy Wright and others became an energy force he could not pull away from. It was in High School, where he became the drum major for the marching band, that he first composed music for sections while choreographing dance routines, that he realized he wanted to do this for the rest of his life.

DJ 2Tru moved to Maryland to attend Morgan State University where he became a member of Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity, Inc. It was during this time when “Praise Parties” were becoming popular and no resource was in place to secure a professional DJ who understood the atmosphere that was trying to be created. Tru had been collecting music over the years from various Gospel artists and Holy Hip Hop artists for his listening pleasure. He was then asked by the organization to provide music for one of the upcoming events on the campus. Without a turntable, Tru used a 5 disc CD changer as his means of transitioning from song to song. While this was a very unconventional style of mixing, he eventually added a sound mixer and a “boom box” CD player where he could blend in between songs. Using the “Aux out” as his Cue, Tru was now a “DJ”.

This bug eventually provoked him to use a credit card and invest in his first Turn table system, in 2001. This $300 investment opened many doors through out the years for him to mix Gospel Events, and (which has become his favorite) Old School parties. Branching out into other forms of popular music such as, Hip-Hop, Soul, Pop, Reggae, Classical, and Jazz opened a door for Tru to be offered a position on the Friday Night Jazz Club on WEAA 88.9FM in Baltimore, where he programs and spins Soul Music each week. This show has assisted Tru to gain audiences around the world with over 100,000 global listeners.

Tru has shared the stage with several local and national artists from Eric Roberson and PJ Morton to Da TRUTH and Jonathan Nelson. He blends music like no other DJ in the area, captivating audiences with his “envelope pushing” style. He believes his gift comes from God and points people back to where his gift came from. Tru says that “music is a universal language and is an art that makes us one.”
